Weekly Presets – Graduated Filters
Well everyone, once again I’m deferring my weekly preset duty to some one else. See, Sean McCormack has some graduated filter presets available over at his site. Here’s the deal. He’s selling a package of 70 graduated filter presets for Lightroom 2 (they cost about $7.75 US). But, he’s also got some samples available free for download. Here’s the link to the website where you’ll see some samples of the presets in action as well as instructions on how to download them. Sound good? I’ll be back next week with a cool preset I’ve been working on (hint: it’s something that lots of folks asked for in Lightroom 1 but we just couldn’t do it). Enjoy your day 🙂
I upgraded to lr2 and it did not bring all my cataloges along. Why and what should I do?
Thanks Mike for the answer. Hope my LR2 arrives today!
That’s a pretty neat tip too – cheers 🙂
As for John Beardsworth’s presets I can’t get them to work for me as the graduated part is being applied down the left hand side of my images, whatever their orientation???
Hi Matt.
I would like to share a tip.
I was processing a number of shoots I did for Filipina actress Patricia Javier and I noticed that when I slide Carity to the positive I noticed that her skin seems to "tighten". Then maybe, if I slide it to the negative then perhaps it would soften. Voila! Negative Clarity equals Soft Skin! It softens in a way that the pores are still visible and so makes the "softening" believable and does not look plastic. Here is the link

Hi Matt,
Thanks for putting together such a great and well-updated blog about lightroom. I think the graduated filters tool is a great addition to LR2 and can’t wait to see what people come up with.
Hey Kathleen,
Once you install LR2 (this is based on my experience – i just did 2 days ago), it automatically picked up and converted my LR1 catalog. Not sure about your beta, but would assume you would add that catalog as a step 2 after migrating your LR1.
As for uninstalling LR1, are you on MAC or Windows? If MAC just drag LR1 icon in your Applications folder to the trash, just make sure everything is working as it should after the migration from LR1 to LR2.
With windows, there should just be an uninstall shorcut in start menu otherwise: START -> CONTROL PANEL -> ADD or REMOVE PROGRAMS -> LR1
Hope this helps! 🙂 ANyone return the favor on my “subfolder” inquiry?
Hi Matt (or anyone else who wants to answer),
Since I know you read the comments I thought I would pose my LR 2 questions here. I purchased LR2 academic version and wondered when I install it, will it give me an option to update both my LR 1 and beta catalogs? Do I just do them one and a time? Also once I get LR2 on my computer, what is the safest way to remove LR1? I need to take it off to have more space on my computer. Thanks for all of your great insight into this program.
Kathleen
Matt (or anyone),
Is there a way in LR2 to do subfolders for presets more than one level deep? (i.e. Main Folder called ‘B&W Presets’ then in that a folder called ‘Step 1’, ‘Step 2’, etc… or something along those lines.
My User Presets folder is getting long and would love a way to nest and better organize.
Thx,
Mike
Or you could even get them for free here: http://www.beardsworth.co.uk/news/index.php?id=C0_27_1 You’ll have to scroll down the page until near the bottom. Look out for a LR icon with a white surrount – the download link is to the left of this in the text.

Very Slick!! I could be up all night playing and working with these. $7.75 could hardly buy a Big Boy Burger or whatever . Thanks Sean. And thanks Matt for pointing us to Sean’s offering.
Matt,
Have you or Scott ever thought of running a forum like my favorite in my other life…skiing. Here is a link. http://forums.skimrv.com/forum-1.html
I think it would be a great resource. Plus it is easy to follow.
