Jill Greenberg Video and a Birthday
Guess who’s birthday it is this week? Nope, not mine (that’s next week in case you want to send presents). This week marks the one year birthday of the official release of Lightroom 1.0. Yep, it’s been a whole year. Actually, it’s been longer then that since LR was out for about a year in beta before that. But most people didn’t really start using it until the launch last February. So happy birthday to Lightroom. What was your workflow like 1 year ago?
EVB (sorry, they didn’t leave their full name) posted a comment yesterday that I wanted to share with everyone. He/she pointed out a link to a video interview done with Jill Greenberg. Her photography has been talked about here a number of times as well as a lot of other places on the web. While she doesn’t share exactly what she’s doing both in camera, and in Photoshop, you can get a good insight into some aspects of her work. I found it really interesting to look at the catch lights in some of the work to see the lighting setup. Anyway, here’s the link.
One last thing. I forgot to mention that the Lomo preset from yesterday was actually on the list of suggested presets from the other week. So congrats to Tiffany for winning a one month subscription to Kelby Training’s online training site.
Balliolman – Not sure when it will go live. I’m working for early March but we’ll have to see.
John – nice.
Fernando – Wish I could help. I’ve only seen that happen when I leave a file open and maybe my computer crashes and it still thinks its open. Sounds weird though.
Elizabeth – I’d bet the silver color is a Photoshop thing.
Thanks,
Matt K
Same to me, Matt: HAPPY BIRTHDAY and thanks a lot for your wonderfull teaching site.
And happy birthday Lightroom, a good friend of my only real passion (after my wife and my kids!): PHOTOGRAPHY.
Regards to everyone

Matt: Thank you for everything you teach and bring us. And congratulations to you also for your next birthday.
I was delighted with the work of Jill Breenberg. Thanks for the recommendation. I have a curiosity, what kind of light used to give these tones in the skin like silver, which are spectacular?
Hi Matt,
I did take a piece of cake to celebrate.
Lots, and lots of things you’ve teached us. (One year of thanks by the way).
We go through our photos faster and better.(Thanks again).
I try to apply all your killer tips, but some times I can’t, here is a problem.
Since you teached us how to go from LR to PSD back and forward, I started to do it, but I just can do it more than one or two times in a row, after that I get a corrupted file, and in order to get in track again I have to quit PSD or LR or both, and start all over again.
I’m working with LR 1.3.1, PSD extended 10.0.1 and have OSX 10.4.11
a MacPro 2×2.66 Dual-Core Intel Xeon, and 3 GB Ram.
– Is the problem with OSX ? or with the software versions? or with my Mac?, Should I use more ram ? Is there a bug I have to fix?
If you need it, I can send you an image of the thumbnail of the corrupted file so you can see how it looks like, which by the way I’m not able to save, I see it in bridge, and when I try to save the changes in PSD in order to go back to LR I get a message telling me that I can’t save the file because it is in use.
Thanks a lot
Fernando Franco
Hey Matt
i cant believe its a year, how did we manage without!?!
BTW did you catch my “impossible preset” ? Lightroom sketch/line drawing:
http://www.pshopcreative.co.uk/users/274/thm1024/sketch.jpg
this was the first attempt but i reckon i have it better now…
I year ago I didn`t know what Lightroom was.
Now I know and I use it all the time. It`s outstanding!!!!!
Btw, it`s my birthday to day 19/2! Happy birthday to me! Lol!
Thomas
LR has made my workflow seamless compared to a year ago. Your killer tips have helped make that workflow even more efficient, Matt!
Looking forward to following your course on LR and PS workflow on Kelby Training — can you give us an idea when it will become available?
Thanks,
Balliolman 🙂
Only a year ? I use Lightroom so much that it seems like it has always been around. My workflow is to the point where the first step is Lightroom and if necessary go to PS and then back to Lightroom finalize and print. With the various presets that you have provided and I have created myself, the need to go back and forth is becoming less and less.
As for sending you a Birthday present, how about if I send you a PRESET 🙂
A poster, several weeks back asked about a Print Module Preset framing a image. I’m just finishing up a series of presets that allow you to visualize what your image may look like matted and framed right in Lightroom. You can see a preview here – http://camerasview.com/archives/231
I have created a series of presets consisting of various frame materials, mat options, sizes and orientations and hope to finalize and post later in this or early next week.
Don’t know if they will work on all platforms, but they work well under Windows Vista.
Congratulations to Adobe on the 1 year Anniversary and thanks Matt for all your efforts and for teaching me how to be more creative.
