Thursday News Stuff

Hi folks. Time for some news and industry info.

– First the big news. Adobe has released the long awaited “online version of Photoshop”. Not so fast though. The press jumped the gun a bit when they coined this the online version of Photoshop. It’s really not, but if you sit back and think about what it does allow you to do I think you’ll see it’s pretty slick. I’m not saying I’m going to run out and use it everyday but I don’t think I’m alone when I say I’ll be recommending that my family and friends use it. Not because I don’t LOVE those phone calls and emails from them when they get stuck (insert sarcasm 🙂 ), but because I think it’s a good solution for a lot of people. Scott and I did a quick video that goes over what it really is and you can see it here on his blog.

– I did an online learning center for Photoshop Express with videos on how to use everything. Again, probably not for most people reading this website but it’s a good place to point your friends and family if they want to learn how to use it.

– I just posted a video about my Layers book and what it’s all about. Here’s the link on Amazon and the book has been hanging in the top 200-400 (of ALL books) since it’s release. Plus it’s got a lot of really nice reviews (26 five star ones!). So if you’re still thinking of getting it but haven’t yet, you can watch the video right here as well as order a signed copy.

– I found a website that shows how to reverse engineer presets in Lightroom. It’s an interesting read if you’re into that reverse engineering thing. Here’s the link.

– Scott Kelby did a really nice article on his blog on shooting tethered into Lightroom. You can see it here.

Have a great day!

Hey Jack! Greetings from up the mountain! I use the Quicktime Viewer to watch Mat’s great videos. You can download that here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download.

As for clause 8, that is insane! I’m not even going to touch it!

Mat, hope you are well. I see there was no post on Friday and hope that it is just because you are out promoting your newest book!

    Hi,

I’m new to all this, and I can’t figure out a way to view the videos (.m4v files). I’ve downloaded one, and can’t play it. I google’d .m4v and it seems there are converters available as freeware. I’m a little leary of downloading things I don’t know about. Is there one you would recommed? I’d like to play it using Windows Media Player. What file format should I convert to???

Thanks, I’m frothing at the mouth to see some of these instructional videos….

I have to argree with the earlier poster about clause 8, thats an insult to anybody who uses the service. We are all intitled to payment if our images are used, adobe should not take advantage like this, in my eyes their reputation is turning sour.
NOBODY should use this service untill that clause is removed. Wayne

    Matt,

Thanks for the link back to my article on decoding Lightroom presets. I wondered where the spike in traffic suddenly appeared from 😉

    Thanks

    Matt,

Have got to agree with the last posters remarks. Will you really be recommending this to family and friends considering what is contained in clause 8? I don’t know so much about ‘sane’ people agreeing to it – my thoughts lie more in the direction of what ‘insane’ person came up with the idea of clause 8 in the first place 🙁

Matt – after reading the general terms, I can’t think of a single sane person that would agree to use the product under those conditions. It may be a great product, but………

adobe photoshop express looks great… but have you read this:

    Hi Matt,

thank you for introducing Photoshop Express. Have you noticed that using it gives Adobe the rights on your pictures you’ve uploaded. They can do everything with them including selling them.
You did the work and Adobe earns your money – quite cool business case, isn’t it?

    Kind regards

    Eric

    Hi Matt,

I think Photoshop Express is more like Lightroom then Photoshop. Most of the tools you make global edits since it doesn’t seem to have masks and layers. It’s definitely something good for people who use their images on the web. I don’t think it’s all that practicable for people who want to print images on their own printer. Maybe they will add online printing later on.

    Hi Matt,

First of all I would like to thank you for all the LR work you’re sharing here. I’m from France and did not find any place on the french web like this one or Scott Kelby’s one. I’m using your presets quite often, it’s such a time saved.
And it’s always a pleasure to see you on Photoshop User TV and learn some more tips on PS.
I’m very interesting on your Layers book, do you know if a french version will be out soon or not? Even if I’d rather have your sign copy…

    Cheers
    Julia

    Hey Matt,

Has nothing to do with Thur news but I was looking for a place to add or ask a question. I’m making contact sheets & I would like a title at the top of these contacts. I used the identity plate & it worked fine on the 1st page but on the 2nd the photos are covering the text. I expanded my spacing on the 1st page which translated to the 2nd. Is there a way to keep the photos from overlapping on the title & to have the filename right under the photo? There’s a lot of space between the name & the horizontal images. In PS I would cut the names & then move them to the right position.

    Thanks a bunch,
