Having Problems w Lightroom 6.2? Rolling Back the Update (Video)

With the newest release of Lightroom 6.2 – there have been users that are experiencing issues with the program. From random hangs to force quits – it would seem that the experiences are focused on the newest Mac OS release of El Capitan – but this is just my opinion on it.

In the interest of trying to help this along I figured I would do a short video talking about the things that could help your installation of Lightroom. Should they not – I show you how to uninstall the application and roll it back with the 6.1 release.

  15. After Lightroom CC 2015 and CC 2015.1(.1) worked flawlessly on my Win 7 machine (i7 at 3.8 GHz, 16 GB RAM, SSD), I suffered LR CC 2015.2/2015.2.1 performance heavily. It hanged for a minute upon opening, crawled 3-4 sec when going to another pic, Paste selection from previous or refreshing complex edit took forever… I felt like I got some 15 years old hardware. My workflow dropped to unsustainable. Uninstalled and reverted to LR 2015 CC 2015.1.1 and now I’m happy again. Not having dehaze in grads? I’ll survive that somehow 😉

    What I’m concerned though is that this is the first heavy performance flaw imposed by Adobe I can remember of — and I’m using LR since version 2 and rely on it heavily. I’m not used to see Adobe making such drops in quality and I sincerely hope it will prove itself an isolated incident.

    • I’m also running a win7 machine with an i7 processor,12 Gb of ram and a 500 gb ssd. Lost my on1 plugins,but on1 were pretty quick with a fix. Reverted back to 6.1.1 as was experiencing random really slow loading of images in the library module and issues with adding keywords. Read somewhere that there is memory leak in the windows update.
      The new import wasn’t such a big deal as my import presets still worked. It was just little unnerving to have no idea if the files were going to the right place as the destination indicated in the import dialog didn’t update to the destination in the preset.

      Glad to see they finally agreed to give back the functionality they took out.

  16. Window 10 with “Add Photos” checked OFF:

    What I learned that if you have your cell phone charging in a USB port (probably any “drive”in a USB port) then LR import starts with “Searching for Photos”…not “Please Select a Source”. If you then Cancel the import and attempt to import again, LR will hang and crash. Unplug the device (Cell Phone) from the USB port and all works as designed including “Please Select Source”….No hangs, no crash.

  17. Thanks RC! I turned off the “Add Photos” screen and I could import again, but it was still laggy and slow. On my Mac running Yosemite, HDR would hang not just lightroom, but the whole computer, I couldn’t even force quit anything for hours. The update to fix 6.2 didn’t help either. LR 6.1 feels so fast now!

    • Thanks RC! Your help is far superior to that I could find on any ADOBE web page. I have rolled back and now have the better version of the software (6.1.1) including the much better import dialogue. I am now really glad I own the standalone LR6 perpetual license as the CC version clearly will have nothing but problems down the road. It will be a long time before I load an “update” from Adobe…. much safer to wait and see how the rest of the world reacts before following the “lemmings into the sea”

      • Disappointed by this latest update. I don’t care for the new import dialog and it was a pretty easy decision to uninstall (Windows) and reinstall 6.1. I don’t see myself updating again unless they switch the import dialog back, or have a preference for which dialog you’d prefer to use. Lightroom is a product intended for professionals or advanced amateurs, let the noobs stick with Photoshop Elements.

  18. I’m still waiting for a response from this site about the disastrous update. Strange that you have gone silent.

    Of the hundreds of negative comments from users, Mr Collins has the only positive assessment of the changes. If I didn’t know better, I’d think that all he did was read the Adobe press release then parrot it back as if he was offering an evaluation. But I know he has more journalistic integrity than that.

    Therefore Mr Collins, in what way did Adobe “do a great job” in making the import procedure “more effective for everyone”?

    That’s a nice way to put it. The whole update is a catastrophy! Adobe has dumbified the import-panel in what they believe is the way to go to gain more beginner-level customers, and they have well knowingly released a bugged update.

    Being fan and professional user of Lightroom for the last 8 years, the new update surely messed up my last week and my work-flow, leaving me very frustrated indeed.

    Having lost the trust in LR/Adobe, I am now using the opportunity to check out good alternatives to Lightroom. Meanwhile, I have downgraded to CC 2015.1.1 and I am not updating to a newer version unless I am 190 % sure that Adobe delivers a version with the new import panel and a bug-free version.

  21. HaHa. The quickly released hot fix 6.2.1 also fails…. I will go back to 6.1 mainly because of the so called “import dialog”. No idea what Adobe was thinking when they developed this. First step into direction smartphone generation.

  26. Running the latest LR 6.2 on El Capitan, with the preference adjusted to avoid application crash. For my general usage, so far, the advanced import screen seems to be adequate. However, all my imports from hard drive folders and camera card are showing black images; the exposure is full left on the slider and the histograms are shove all into shadows. The solution so far seems to be to Auto Tone every image from the Library Module. Anyone else see this? BTW, I also do not have the audio portion for the video presented above.

  27. I really hope Adobe will bring back the old import-dialog. Move Pictures, eject card and the folder-tree are missing and i can see not a single improvement comparing to the old version. This is really frustrating!

  29. It took almost an hour for me to export 129 photos to a thumb drive, and I also miss the eject card after import! I am using 10.9.5. Updates also seem to mess with the printing system, although this latest one has not caused any major issues so far.

  30. What about the removed functions? Will Adobe ever address that? Loss of the Destination Folder. ability to eject your card after import, having to uncheck all of the photos for import just so that you can even see them, etc?? RC, what are your thoughts on this and how this effects your workflow.

    • After updating to LR 6.2, I saw the comments on the web. When I opened the import panel, I was horrified. Then I clicked on the advanced tab (click wheel) and after 10 minutes I was relieved. Except the eject card after import and not import duplicates, everything is there. If you want to see your pictures before import, double click on it and it becomes full screen. Uncheck at the bottom to not import. After working with it for a couple of hours, I now prefer the new UI. Turning off Show “Add Photos” screen resolved the app crashing. This needs to be fixed whatever it does.

      • Serge, I turned off the Add photos screen and I agree you can import photos almost the same way as before. That is not the problem. The problem is that you can not Move photos anymore, the option to eject your card after import creates an added step. You can’t zoom in on a photo set for import to see if it is truly in focus. And the destination folder tree was nice reassurance that the photos were going to were you wanted them to go. Adobe changed the import UI but also TOOK away options that too many photographers relied upon. Why?? What was the harm in keeping them?? Or giving us a choice as to what we wanted to use in the import process rather than LIMIT what we can use?

        • It really makes you wonder what Adobe is thinking?? Did they hire the apple engineers who once worked with Aperature ? In all the years I’ve used Adobe PS and LR I’ve never seen an upgrade that that went backwards and had so many bugs….Very scary..

  32. I run Windows 7 Professional and have had all the problems listed above from moment one. Clearly Adobe released a product before it was ready and should either post repairs or allow people to roll back to the prior, fully functional, version from their web site and not have to resort to going elsewhere for the fix.

    Not a professional release Adobe.

  34. Rolling back an update due to bugs is the most severe remedy possible. Are you recommending that a) everybody should bypass this update until the bugs are fixed, or b) everybody should update and see what happens?

    BTW, I have not read one positive comment about the new Import interface. Will there be a chance to keep the 6.1 Import schema?

  36. It’s not just El Capitan, I’m using 10.9.5 and while the application is stable, I can’t export. No dialog box, nothing. Very frustrating. I have a thread on adobe.com but no solution so far. Sigh.

  37. I have been having problems with Lightroom CC but it may be due to Windows 10. I can open it, Go to one folder or Collection, Open one image in Develop, go back to Library, Try to open a second image and Lightroom Freezes up and shuts down. Yes I have updated the Video driver and there is not a problem in Photoshop CC. Suggestions welcome outside of “Getting a Mac” since it seems they are having problems too.

    • Where we you yesterday RC 🙂 I have the same issue since I installed the update two days ago and it was not stable at all. Long story short I spent 3 hours on the phone with an Adobe technician, last night and this person was extremely knowledgeable and exhausted every possibility to get the update to work after which he reverted me back to the previous version and that works just fine.

        • Oh I’m sure they are “working” on it. Meanwhile just keep handing them $9.95 a month until they get it figured out. A subscription based model works only as good as the software does.
