Lightroom Q&A

Here’s the latest round of Q&A’s. Feel free to leave a comment and keep ‘em coming.

Q. After viewing the 100 reasons Lightroom is better that Bridge I made the switch and purchased Lightroom . I am trying to figure our how to move my ACR presets to Lightroom. I can’t seem to figure this out. What am I missing?
A. There’s no “official” way to convert them, but here’s a link on the Lightroom forums that has a workaround.

Q. How can I save my print templates to a JPEG like you did in your multi-photo print preset?
A. In the Print module, scroll down on the right hand side panels to the last one (the Print Job panel). The first setting is called “Print To”. Just turn it to the JPEG option and you’ll save your layout as a JPEG instead of sending it to the printer.

Q. Love all the presets I get from you, Matt. I recently bought a new computer (dell) and bought CS5 and Lightroom 3. Is there an easy way to move all my presets and brushes (teeth whitening) to my new computer/ Lightroom 3?
A. Sure thing. I posted a video a couple of weeks ago about moving presets. Here’s the link.

Q. How can we move an Identity plate from one catalog to the other?
A. While you can move most presets, Identity Plates are the one exception. So they don’t fall into the preset video I just mentioned above. If you’ve used an image you created as an identity plate then you’ll have to re-import that image image for the new one.

Q. Hey Matt, was just looking at some of your Paris photos that you wrote about a while back. You noted the photos were taken with a Nikon D3. Which “traveling” tripod did you take with you? I would like to travel relatively “light”.
A. I’m with ya! I love to travel light. I use the Gitzo traveler. It’s REALLY light and so small it fits into by laptop case. The one I have is discontinued but I there’s an updated version if you search for “Gitzo Traveler”.

Have a great day!

  1. I also use the Gitzo traveller tripod. I am using it with the Really Right Stuff BH-25 head. It’s the best travel tripod I ever used!

  2. Matt,
Thanks for all of your help with lightroom.
As an offshoot of the question about printing to JPEGs, I was wondering if you could ask adobe to add all the export functioning to the print to JPEG functionality. I have created some really nice multi photo templates and I would love to save them with the keywords as their file name. I have saved a preset to do this when exporting, but when saving print module work as a JPEG all of this functionality isn’t there.
I know in the most recent PhotoshopUserTV episode Dave Cross showed how to make this kind of thing in PhotoShop but using the print module in Lightroom is so much easier.

  3. Matt, You were not concerned about the D3 and the Gitzo tripod (no doubt equipped with a Really Right Stuff ball head) being ripped off? What precautions did you take so you were not a target. Any travel tips would be appreciated.

  4. Hey Matt, love your site, have learnt LR through your videos ever since LR1beta was launched.

Am starting a blog now and would like to use my LR library pics. In photoshop there is an option to save for web. How do you optimize images for web use via LR? What export and other settings are best used? Perhaps a good idea for a next video or blog post. Thanks anyway.

    cheers Bas

  6. Love your tips & tricks – check them out every day. thank you. Here’s a few questions I’d love the answers to in the Print Module :

#1 Is there a way to do multi-line text in the print module. For my sports shooting, I frequently use the print template to pull 3 or 4 pictures into a single image (using templates) and I like to add some captions. If it’s single line, I just use the watermark text, but what I really want is 2 or 3 lines of text (teams & score, location, date) with progressively smaller text. I know I can do it photoshop but it would be so much faster if I can could stay in lightroom.

#2 is there a way to evenly space or display a ruler when creating templates for the print module. I’ve made a number but find I have to eyeball things instead of being able to evenly distribute 3 images across a page.

    keep up the great work,

    jim

  7. Hi Matt,

I have been searching for the answer to this for a long time. Hope you can help.

When I back up my catalog it creates a file with the date and time for the name. I have about 11 or 12 backup that way. One of them and only one also has a sub folder named “Catalog 1 Previews.lrdata”. Why don’t the other backups have that? And what is it????

    Thanks,
    Joe

  10. Hi Matt, can you please delete the comment by “Bas Kakebeeke” (=me) to this post?
I’d rather not have my last name posted on the comment list. My last name was auto-filled onto the comment form by accident. Thanks for your help

  11. I have a tip which some readers might find useful. The way I have my workflow organized keeps all my settings and identity plates, and all other preferences available to all my catalogs, residing on the drive and newly created. The way I do it, when I create new catalog, it creates a folder by that name in my Lightroom folder, which contains catalog file, one more file which I am not sure what is the purpose and a folder with settings. I close Lightroom, and copy from that folder my catalog file and the second file, and put them both into main Lightroom folder, with my remaining catalogs and single Plugins folder, Settings folder and access to my identity plates saved into presets and residing in this folder as well. I find it very practical.

  12. I own an iPad (1). I’d like to be able to shoot tethered via LR3, to my iPad. I have a mobile hot spot that I can use with both my macbook pro (loaded with LR 3) to which tether would have to be attached. Do you know how I could send it via wifi to iPad from the MBP? I’d like to try letting clients see/pass around images on iPad (almost) real time as I shoot.

  13. I even make some very popular preset collections that I sell over on ..So theres a couple of ways to install Lightroom presets and today Im gonna show you both including the guru method. Im talking about develop presets but it should be noted that these methods are essentially the same with any user preset such as print presets gallery presets etc.

  14. Camera Calibration Profiles question.

Matt, so I am wee bit confused about the camera calibration profiles in LR3. Is there a place to down load specific camera profiles for specific cameras?

I have LR,3.4.1, 64 bit at home, and it shows the following camera profiles: pentax K7, adobe standard, camera standard. I also have LR3, 3.4.1, 32bit on a work machine, but it doesn’t show a Pentax K7 camera profile.

I have no idea how my home computer got the pentax K7 profile. I shoot K7, Raw DNG, sRGB, and 8 bit color.

Can you tell me how camera profiles end in up the LR develop module?

    regards Dan

  15. Hi Matt,

Our business now uses 2 computers with lightroom on each. But there is no way of syncing lightroom. Is this a feature that adobe will work on in future editions?

Is there a work around somehow?

  16. I recently purchased Lightroom 3 and Scott Kelby’s book on Lightroom 3.

I was working on a slide show which I want to give to my friend, who lives in another state and doesn’t have a computer because of her age (she is 82) and the fear of them. But has a dvd player and can play DVD’s on her television.

My question is, how do I make this dvd for television viewing.

I purchased your podcast / DVD LR3 In Depth, Part two and transferred to my iPad. But I have ended up with all the chapters individually rather than in a single folder.

This is probably my mistake but how do I get all the chapters of your DVD/Podcast into one folder?

A long time fan, love your work and tutorials
