Tip – Quickly Changing Folders in Develop

Happy Friday everyone. Here’s a quick tip. If you’re developing your photos and you want to quickly switch to another folder or collection, I’ve seen a lot of people go back to the Library module to select it. They then click the folder or collection, then find the photo, then go back into the Develop module. That’s a huge pain, right? Well, below the toolbar but above the Filmstrip (at the bottom) is a small filter area. In this area is a path that shows you what folder and photos you’re looking at. Next to it, on the right, is a small down-facing arrow. If you click on it you’ll see a list of recent folders and collections that you’ve viewed. Click here to see a graphic of what I’m talking about. Then just choose the folder or collection you want to jump to and Lightroom will take you there without leaving the Develop module. Pretty nifty huh?

Well, I hope you have a great weekend. My wife is at an out-of-town wedding this weekend so I’m Mr. Mom for 3 days. I hope my kids are ready for delivery pizza, microwaved chicken nuggets, and ice cream all weekend cause that’s about the best I can do :) See ya!

  1. Well, you don’t have to point to that little arrow – the whole breadcrumb text is clickable.

  7. Hi Matt! Nice Tip you got here, once more. I really love it, and i will always come back to lighroom killertips to see how new things are goin.

For me is that real hard to “add” new tips in my worklflow. I really need to think “hey try it different, use this from now!” Otherwise i just forget it. I need to change my own workflow by doin things different. I mean I work everyday with lr but somehow i just do it and use it always the same way…otherwise i get messy with editing. Just wondering if other people have the same experience with using new tips&tricks in their workflow. Hope u know what i mean. Have a nice Weekend

  11. Hey, just a quick question. If you relaunch from a back-up you lose any information going forward, right? I tried to find an image in the finder- right clicking on photo, but it points back to a folder that does not have the image. I have not deleted anything, so I am assuming the photo is still there somewhere. Just need to find it. Thanks, Cindy

  12. In a similar vein Ctrl + Alt + Left Arrow (Cmd + Opt + Left Arrow) lets you navigate backwards through the recent folders and collections you depict above. The great thing about this approach is you don’t need to have the Filmstrip open to use it!

  13. i noticed this by accident too, but thanks for the tip.
Is there any way to actually see all folders or collections, or are we fixed to recent?

  14. Hi Matt,
I am new to Lightroom and your website has really helped me get a lot more out of it. I work with RAW and export JPEGS. Is there quick way to export JPEGS of an entire folder of RAW images into a subfolder within the original folder AND have Lightroom recognize it? So far it seems like I have to export the JPEGS and then import them back into Lightroom.
Thanks for all your help! I especially enjoy your video tutorials and Before/Afters.

  16. Hi Matt,

Ive watch your lightroom tips on camera profiles/calibration and you advise us to download the camera profiles and camera raw 4.3 / lightroom 2.0. after doing so and installing this my lightroom profiles (camera calibration) is still embedded (default) and non of them shows up.

I know this tips is pretty old on this killer tips but i am beginner in this lightroom thats why im still digging on most of your basic archived tips. hope you can hep me in rectifying this or re-divert me on your previous tip if any body commented similar to this.

    cheers,
    neil

  18. I’ve always had trouble with this and can’t seem to find answers via searches… how do you return back to lightroom quickly after EDITING a photo in photoshop?

so you’re in lightroom… edit in photoshop… save… (saves as TIFF)… then i want to go back and continue doing stuff in lightroom… any suggestions?

  19. Hello,

when I ‘m in the develop mode, I ad a photo to a collection? Or have I to move back to the Libary. Becaus I can’t make a smart collection which at the the size the photo is cut. For example 9 by 13 or 13 by 18.

    Thanks
