Video: A Quick Make-Your-Photo-Better Setting in Lightroom

After the last few stops in my Lightroom 4 Live Tour I realize there was a lot of questions on the Camera Calibration settings that basically, let you make your photo better with just one click. So I thought I’d take a minute to, not only go over the settings but also show you a couple of ways that you can have Lightroom automatically apply those settings to your photos so that you’re not left doing it manually each time. Also, here’s the link to the Lightroom seminar page that I mentioned in the beginning of the video. If you’re in Washington DC, Lansing, Richmond or San Francisco, I’d love to see you out at one of the seminars next month. Thanks!

  • Hi Matt,
I created develop presets for each camera style (and one for lens correction) and I can preview the effect of each in the Navigator window before I applying one.

  • In Lightroom, I have only one choice (Adobe Standard) from the dropdown in Camera Calibration. I’m shooting RAW with a Sony A55, using Lightroom 4.

    Should I be seeing more?

  • Absolutely brilliant! Seriously takes a load off of my back because I would’ve sworn up and down that I was halfway insane to always be disappointed by the camera’s preview compared to the actual files I upload.

    NOW I KNOW WHY. :0

  • Can I some how import my own calibration styles here too?

  • Thanks for the tip, I always wanted to know what that Calibration was. I will start “playing” with it today and see how I can incorporate it into my bag of tricks.

    Thanks again for educating me!!

  • Matt:

Always appreciate your tips and examples, but it would be great if they could be made larger. So far, I cannot find a control tab to do that (like on Vimeo or YouTube). Is there a way to make the tips full screen to see more clearly what you are doing while you explain?

    • Right click on the video window and select Toggle Fullscreen

    • John:

Simply subscribe to the LKT podcast on iTunes. The videos download and you can play them as large as you’d like under iTunes.

  • Can i some how import my custom camera calibration settings to lightroom too?

  • Sure hope you come to the Boston area soon with your LR tour.

    • Possibly this summer. Stay tuned on the site here. I’m sure I’ll promote the heck out of them when new dates are announced ;)

  • Matt,

Great suggestions! Although my drop down panel from camera calibration doesn’t show the camera that I shot with – Canon 7D. Is there a way to add that to the list somehow, somewhere???

    • Hey Cyndi. It’s not supposed to show your camera. It just lists available picture styles (presets) that are available for your camera. I shot with a D3 (or D3s) and mine doesn’t say D3 under it. Just the styles :)

  • Great video. Thanks for sharing. I really appreciated learning more about the camera calibration. I noticed just toggling back and forth between them what they did, but I didn’t know about setting the default or about setting it up as a potential develop preset to use upon import. “The More You Know…”

  • So, I have a problem in lightroom 4. When I select a preset for a photo and then click undo it the program reverts back to the same preset and does not return to the original photo.

  • I cannot see these videos, all i can see is a moving two tone grey stripes.
Have installed flash and uninstalled it several times to no avail.
I am using firefox but still get the same problem with explorer and chrome.
Hope somebody can help and ive googled the problem but cant find the solution.

    Thanks in advance (hopefully lol)

  • Thanks for that great tip! I never looked at that panel, now I am going to make presets

  • Thanks for this tip! The panel is something worth exploring further.

  • Thanks for this post, It makes things a bit easier :)

  • [...] 2, 2012   Es gibt wieder Neues von Matt Kloskowski. Einmal hier ein Video und dann auf dieser Seite Presets für Nikon- und Canon-Benutzer. Viel Spaß [...]

  • All I get is Adobe Standard I have no other options. I am using Lightroom 4 shooting raw.
