When you use DNG and Lightroom, are develop settings, keywords, etc. automatically written to the file? If not, will checking the “write changes to XMP” make Lightroom write to the DNG file rather than a sidecar?

Hello Matt,

I noticed in your video training on lightroom 2 preferences, at the top of your lightroom program, you had a US Flag, rotate, sound and a few others, how did you get those extra options?

Thanks for this video.

I have a question that is a touch off base here…I recently lost a harddrive which I haven’t backed up in a few months due to buying my first house and spending every waking minute on it. Anyways, LR still has the images displayed from a little summer vacation the wife and I had…I don’t care if I don’t get the full size images back, but as long as I could somehow save the images that are shown in LR. Is this possible?

Regarding Preferences, my LR exports to PS Elements though I have CS2 on my machine also — how can I change this as I want the alternative external editor for PTLens corrections?

Regarding the XMP side car option in preferences.

I wanted to mention the way I use Lightroom in case others might find it useful as well.

As a wedding photographer, backups are extremely important to me and I have a method of backing up that works for me.

The main thing is that I like to keep my backups together. In other words, all of my raw files for a given wedding are in one folder, all of the jpegs for those files are in a series of subfolders under that. Any processed images are likewise kept together within the same structure. This makes it easy to back up the entire wedding at once by simply backing up the top level folder for that wedding.

Well, what about all of my Lightroom settings for that wedding?

I could back up my Lightroom database … but for various reasons I have had to blow my LR database away from time to time and so not all of my settings are in the database.

Plus, the downside to backing up my LR database is that restoring a given wedding now requires two restores; one for LR and one for the images.

Rather than do this, I use the XMP sidecars. I have LR set to always write the XMP files. This does have a small impact on performance. But because XMP sidecars reside in the same directory as the raw files, it means that every time I back up a given wedding, all of my LR2 changes are backed up with it. Everything is kept together.

I’ve moved LR databases from one machine to another and all I’ve ever had to do was import the raw files (which automatically imports the XMP files at the same time).

Anyway, I find it extremely handy and thought others might consider it as well.
