Lightroom 2 – The Day After FAQ
Lightroom 2 has been out for exactly 1 day now and the upgrade response here on the site yesterday was pretty outstanding. But there were also a lot of comments and questions. So I figured I’d answer as many of them as a I can here:
Will Lightroom 1 presets work with Lightroom 2?
You betcha. When you install Lightroom 2, those presets will automatically come over to the new version. I haven’t come across any of my presets that don’t work in the new version yet.
Will Lightroom 2 work with my Lightroom 1 catalogs?
Yes. When you first install and start Lightroom 2 it will ask you if you’d like to upgrade an existing catalog.
Will my settings, changes, and everything else I’ve done in LR 1 be in Lightroom 2?
Yes, when you upgrade your catalog it’ll take over all of the settings and changes to your photos.
Will Adobe be releasing any of those dot (.1, .2, etc…) updates for Lightroom 2? I haven’t heard any dates or specific plans but if I were a bettin’ man, I’d bet black, 6, 8, the pass line, hard eight, double-down on 11… sorry, I got carried away. What I meant to say is that I’d bet yes – they will release 1 or more dot updates in the future.
Should I wait for an update before purchasing Lightroom 2? I don’t want a Lightroom 1.4 debacle to happen again.I can’t 100% say that you won’t have a problem but I’ll tell you this. I’ve been using the GM version of Lightroom (GM is a term meaning Gold Master which is essentially the shipping version of the software) for about 2 weeks now. Everything has worked fine for me. The sliders as just as responsive as they ever were. I will say that I have noticed using the Adjustment Brush to be a bit processor-heavy but that’s a price I’ll pay to have that kind of control in LR. I’ve adjusted my self to brush fairly slower then I would have in Photoshop. Also, I know brushing on a Mac has always been a bit odd in Photoshop (takes a second for it to render on screen) so maybe it’s the same deal – maybe the PC is very responsive but I haven’t tried it on one yet. Also, I have had one other little glitch in showing and hiding my panels but other people I know running the same version don’t have this so I’m chalking it up to some mix ups with previous betas I’ve had installed. I plan on wiping out all of my Lightroom folders soon and starting from a brand new install again I think that should do it. So, other then the one small glitch, everything is working fine on my end.
Why is Adobe charging so much extra for international customers?
Folks, I’m gonna tell you the honest truth here – I have no idea. Because of what I do, I get to be on the beta testing team for Lightroom. That means I get to see the features and comment on them but mostly after the feature set is locked. From time to time I may actually get to give input on new features for Lightroom but Adobe, in NO way, comes and asks me or anyone I know, “Matt, what should we charge for Lightroom?”. My main job is to train people on Photoshop and Lightroom and because of that, I really have no idea why they’re charging so much more. I have to admit, it sounds odd to me too and I totally feel your pain. I would be ticked as well. Your best course of action is to go to Adobe’s website and either a) email or mail your feedback to them, or b) call them and express your pissed-offness (sorry… anger). That’s what I would do.
Any other price or purchase or license related questions?
See above. I simply just don’t know.
How does the upgrade / installation of LR2 deal with the two separate catalogues (and photo folder structure) when both LR1 and LR2 beta (Silvertone) are installed on your system?Does it merge them automatically into a new catalogue or does the user have to import them separately?I haven’t tried to import my Lightroom 2 beta catalog yet but I’d guess it imports them just fine. I can definitely tell you it won’t merge catalogs though. You’d have to import each one separately and merge/change your folders after the fact.
In some form or another – Can I install Lightroom on 2 machines?
Yes. Even if one is 64-bit and one is 32-bit, you can install on both.
Matt, you mentioned something about PSD files and the way they automatically got created in version 1. Where can I find these PSD files and delete them?See this link from a previous video I created.
Why don’t my PSD files appear back in Lightroom when I work on them in Photoshop?
That’s actually one of the new features. Lightroom 2 doesn’t save the PSD file right away anymore. You’ve got to hit File > Save in Photoshop to save the file so it appears back in Lightroom.
I’m a NAPP member. Where is the discount code?
Here’s the link to the NAPP member website software discount page. You’ll find it about halfway down. I just tried it and it saved $44 bucks on the full $299 version.

I was just wondering if anybody knew about the editing in external applications issue? I have seen several people mention it, but nobody has responded to it yet. This is directly from Adobe – “Tighter integration with Adobe Photoshop
Open photos from Lightroom in Photoshop more quickly and as a Smart Object. Merge multiple photos to panorama, merge multiple high dynamic range (HDR) photos, or open multiple photos as one layered file in Photoshop. When you return to Lightroom, edited images are automatically added to the catalog. See Edit photos in Photoshop.” They say in the release notes that when you return the edited images will be there, but they aren’t. Even if I do as you say and go save it first, they don’t show up in LR. I either have to import them, or resynch the folder to get them to come in. It would be nice to know if they are working on this, if not how can we let them know?
There is an issue with the edit in photoshop option. You do have to sync the folder afterwards. It seems as if LR2 is built for Vista x64 on a quad core system because I have had a improvement in performance compared to LR1.4. Despite what others have said.
On a 64bit quad system with only 2GB of DDR3 I’m running much faster. I have my catalog with over 20,000 DNG photos in it. From time to time I’ve noticed when browsing through all the photos in grid view it can lag from time to time but thats just do to the large files. Launching LR2 is much faster, LR1.4 always took a few min for me and LR2 is pretty instant.
Between the 64bit support and Dual Monitor support the upgrade was worth it. The masking brush and gradient tools are nice touches but not the key features. I’m still waiting for internal HDR and Pano Stitching support.
I have yet to test if I can now load gigapixel photos into lightroom. Previously in LR1.4 there was a resolution limit. Will see if thats the case in LR2
Hi Matt,
not a gripe at you but Adobe! Just to add salt to the wounds for us international customers – not only do we have to pay more, but the Napp discount is not valid either
I am looking forward to upgrading sometime soon despite this but Adobe are not making any friends internatonally.
I still love this site, keep up the good work,
Rich.
I find the edit in Photoshop is working such as this: (WIN)
Edit in PS3, save. (TIFF)
Shows up in catalog/collection, retains rank but not flag and is not stacked. Normally I have the collection filtered to Flags and a certain rank. So I unfilter the Flag option, the file is there next to the CR2, pick it and refilter. I don’t think it is stacked though.
Martin Evenings LR2 book indicates the Stack w/Original dialogue is still present but I do not see it in preferences, and I don’t get any dialogue when I click edit in PS3 to select it as he indicates.

Sorry, Matt, but the PSD issue is not a “new feature in LR2″. It’s just a very annoying bug.
I also have to manually synchronize the folder for the PSDs to show up. A very time consuming and manual process.
Note: Works perfect on my MacBook Pro 10.5, but bug on Win Vista Ultimate.
The PSD bug clarified (from my bug report to Adobe):
1. LR (English) in grid view, right-click on image, choose “edit in Photoshop CS3″ (English)
2. Edit image
3. Save image in PS and close it
Result: The PSD file is stored in the same folder than the original unedited DNG file, thats as it should be. BUT: the image shows up in the catalog, but in the folder panel the folder is now duplicated and even the drive (F: in my case) is duplicated! There are two folders now with the same name and two F: drives show up. If you right click on the image and choose “show in Explorer” there is only ONE PSD file and only one folder too.
Expected results: Image should show up next to the original file in grid view and be stacked. No duplicate folder and drive in the folders panel
On my MacBook Pro 10.5 this works perfectly as it should.
Very strange. I hope Adobe will correct that soon. It’s very time consuming always to manually synchronize the folder.
Same problem here as many others, photos edited and saved in Photoshop don’t appear in Lightroom.
Matt- first of all wanted to say what a fantastic blog you have the tips, and presets are awesome. I share the frustration of others who have commented on the pricing politics of Adobe and realize this is not the role of your blog (although the marketing folk at Adobe are surely reading it!). For readers wanting to vent their anger at pricing you should perhaps head over to the Adobe forum and join the thread of angry customers: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5f71e/
Hi Matt,
I’ve got a dual-boot WinXP 32-bit and Vista 64-bit machine, and Lr 2 is installed on both. They each have their own catalogs, but I have just one copy of all my photos. Can I point the 64-bit Lr 2 installation to the 32-bit Lr 2 catalog folder so I don’t lose changes made in either environment? In other words, are the catalogs binary-compatible between 32-bit and 64-bit Lightrooms?
Thanks!
