Friday Tip!

Lightroom Tips  //  Comments Off

Quick Tip #1) Here’s a tip I picked up from talking with Scott Kelby about the Quick Develop area in the Library module. One good way to work with Quick Develop is to use it to select a bunch of questionable photos that you’re not sure if you want to delete when you’re in the Library. Maybe they have a bad color cast or poor exposure and you’re not sure if they’re worth bringing back. Well with just a few clicks in Quick Develop you can check. Then if you think the photo warrants some further tweaking you can bring it into the full Develop module. If not, then you’ll know you can delete it.

Quick Tip #2) Ok, it’s not as much of a tip as it is an FYI… Some of you may know I’m part of a video webcast called Photoshop TV. Well, we were up in New York earlier this week and got to participate in the live announcement of the entire CS3 product line. We got interviews with some really key folks in the industry and had a great time as well. Scott posted some photos from our time there on his blog so check them out.

Quick Tip #3) Now this is not a tip in any way, shape, or form. I just wanted to keep with the whole tip theme thingee that I’m doing – sorry :) Anyway, next week I’ll be up at the Photoshop World conference in Boston and I’m teaching as part of the Lightroom track at the conference. Make sure you stop and check it out or just stop and say Hi if you’re going to Photoshop World. Have a great weekend.

Free Lightroom Presets

Gallery Spotlights  //  Comments Off

I’m not one to pass up free stuff so I thought I’d mention this one. Jack Davis (renowned Photoshop educator, author and Photoshop Hall of Famer) has worked with onOne Software to create one-click photo presets that work specifically with Lightroom. There are over 80 presets that work with the tone, color, as well as many other types of specialized conversions that you can achieve with your photos. As you can imagine, with 80 of them, the possibilities are pretty remarkable. So hat’s off to Jack and the team at onOne Software for jumping into what will be a brand new avenue for creativity with Photoshop Lightroom. Download the presets here.

Get the Red Eye Out

Lightroom Videos  //  Comments Off

This week I’m taking a look at the Red Eye removal tool in Lightroom. Why red eye you ask? Because it happens. We know it shouldn’t happen and there’s plenty of ways to help keep it from happening but for those times it does, you’re going to be happy that Lightroom does indeed have this feature. So sit back, fire up the video and see how to remove red eye from your photos in Lightroom. Click here to watch the video. (5 Mb)

My Interview with Scott Kelby

Lightroom Videos  //  Comments Off

I know what you’re thinking. Today is Friday and Friday is tip day. Well I have a tip. In fact, there are two today. But I’ve left it up to Scott Kelby to give them to you (they’re at the end of the video). If you remember last week I posted Dave Cross’s interview with Scott Kelby about Lightroom. Well, I said to myself, “Self, how come all of us here at Lightroom Killer Tips were left out of the interview loop?”. So I set out to find Scott and rope him in for an interview. Turns out he’s my boss so I don’t have to go looking too far to find him since he usually finds me first. That said, I did get him away from the daily to-do list for a video interview. As you watch you’ll hear references toward his new Lightroom book (which, by the way, I saw today and it looks awesome!) as well as the brand new Lightroom Live 2007 tour he’s doing. If you’re interested in either of those here are the links:

Lionel Deluy Photography

Gallery Spotlights  //  Comments Off

I recently ran across this site and I found many aspects from it very inspiring. Now, let’s face it… I know I’ll never be a celebrity photographer, but there’s more to Lionel’s work then just celebrities. Just looking through his portfolio, you’ll find some incredibly striking and creative ideas when it comes to lighting. For me, it’s inspiring and that is what this Wednesday post was really all about when I started this site – inspiring photography. Lionel’s got everything from fashion to beauty to advertising work. It’s all different but in many ways the same and I think that’s what I really like about his work. He manages to inject his style in so many different types of work. So check it out at www.lioneldeluy.com.

Come join me in Banff National Park

Lightroom Tips  //  Comments Off

I wanted to invite you to join me for a killer, 4-day photo/Photoshop workshop in Banff. I’ll be teaching Photoshop, Lightroom and the whole digital workflow process alongside two world-class photographers, Neil and Susan Silverman. Here’s how it works:

Morning: Wake up for an early morning sunrise shoot. Then head back to the hotel for breakfast and a break.
Mid Morning: Head into the classroom to learn how to process those photos. Since we’ll all be shooting, we’re going to go through the entire workflow process using Lightroom and Photoshop from start to finish.
Afternoon: Break for lunch and relax. Then head back into the classroom for photo critiques, photography lessons and more Photoshop.
Early evening: Head out for a sunset shoot and then dinner with a great group of people.
Next day: Do it all over again, but this time we delve even further into each topic.

Folks, these workshops are incredible. I can personally attest to the fact that you will leave the weekend with more knowledge and inspiration then you thought would come from just a few days. Not to mention we are shooting in one world-class location. The mountains, trees, and glassy lakes in Banff are said to be some of the best in the world. So come on out and join me and the Silvermans for 4 inspiring, fun, and photography-changing days. You can find out more at www.gapweb.com (scroll down to the bottom to see my class). As you’ll see from the workshops that are near in the future, these classes will fill up, so sign up soon to get a spot. Hope to see you there.

Quick Develop in Lightroom

Lightroom Videos  //  Comments Off

One topic I hear a lot of questions on is the Quick Develop module in Lightroom. Why is it there? What does it do? When should I use Quick Develop over the Develop module? Well that’s what this week’s video covers – Quick Develop. I’ll talk a little about where it fits in and how you can use it in your workflow to quickly improve groups of photos all at once.

My Two Absolute Most Favoritest Shortcuts in Lightroom

Lightroom Tips  //  Comments Off

Today’s tip is all about me. You may not care in any way what my two favorite (yes, I know favoritest isn’t a word) shortcuts are but my guess is that if I like ‘em – then you’ll like ‘em too. So here it is. I’m often jumping back and forth between the Library module and the Develop module. Well once I get a photo that I want to process selected in Library I just press D to work in Develop for that photo. Then, if I’m in the Develop module (or anywhere else for that matter), I can quickly get back to the Library module by pressing the letter G for Grid. That really is just taking you to Grid view in the Library module but that’s usually where I want to be anyway. So there you have it – my two absolute most favoritest shortcuts in Photoshop Lightroom.

Scott Kelby and Dave Cross Talk Lightroom

Lightroom Tips  //  Comments Off

OK, so I really feel bad about being away last week and not posting (hey, I was on vacation) but I’m trying to make it up with a few more posts this week. I just took a look at Dave Cross’s exclusive interview with Scott Kelby on Photoshop Lightroom. It’s got some great insights into how Lightroom is being perceived by photographers out there. Scott has been one of the pioneers. He’s been out there teaching Lightroom from the get-go, so no one else is as equipped to talk about it as he is. I personally saw the blood, sweat (and almost tears) that he put into his totally-rewritten Lightroom book. All I have to say is that if you’re a photographer and starting to use Lightroom, there is no better book out there to learn it from.
You can check out the interview here.
You can pre-order Scott’s Lightroom book here.
